Key takeaways

  • The organic certificate is not being paid at origin: certified leaves at $10.37 a kilo and the wider dehydrated category at $10.44.
  • The category itself repriced hard, from $4.35 a kilo two years ago to $9.95 now, so an old quote is no reference at all.
  • Concentration is moderate: 63 exporters, 50 recently active, and the top three hold 50.3% of the value.

Certified organic dried fruit leaves Peru at $10.37 a kilo. The same category without the certificate leaves at $10.44.

A third of the trade is certified. The certificate does not move the price at the point of export.

What was measured

Every dried fruit shipment leaving Peru since the start of 2024, split by whether the description declares organic status, and priced in the unit the trade actually uses.

Certified organic accounts for $4.6M and prices at $10.37 a kilo. The wider dehydrated category prices at $10.44.

The gap is smaller than the rounding on a freight quote.

This is not a market without a premium

The obvious objection is that nothing is being paid for anything here, and the numbers say otherwise.

The category roughly doubled its price per kilo in two years.

The typical shipment moved the same way, from $8.91 to $11.50. The price more than doubled. Something is being paid for, and it is simply not the certificate.

What is actually being paid for

Goldenberry is the largest single family in the trade at $6.5M. Dried mango strips and apple slices sit alongside it.

The buyers concentrate where you would expect. The United States takes 39.8% of the volume and Germany 16.0%, both paying above $10.70 a kilo.

The Netherlands, Italy, Israel, Australia and Canada follow, all in the same band.

Those are the markets where organic retail exists. The premium is being earned there, on a shelf, in a currency and a channel that a Peruvian exporter never touches.

By the time the requirement reaches the exporter it is a condition of entry rather than a lever. Everyone selling into those buyers is certified, so the certificate stops distinguishing anyone.

Average export price per kilo

A destination that breaks the scale

One line in the data needs flagging, because it will corrupt any average built without it.

Ecuador takes 9.1% of the volume at $0.70 a kilo, while every other major destination sits far above that.

That is not the same product travelling to a cheaper market. It is a different product, and any country comparison that leaves it in the pot is comparing categories rather than destinations.

The shape of the supply

The trade runs through 63 exporters, and the top three hold 50.3% of the value.

It is opening rather than closing. Active exporters grew year on year while the volume multiplied by four.

For a buyer that is the useful part. A market that is growing and adding suppliers at the same time is a market where a new relationship can still be built on ordinary terms.

Two units, two conversations

Most of this trade is quoted per kilo, at a median of $10.93. A smaller group of shipments was declared by the box instead, at a median of $103.

A box price and a kilo price are not the same negotiation. The box hides the fill weight, and the fill weight is where a quiet difference between two offers can live.

What to ask for

Three things, and they follow directly from the numbers.

Ask for the certificate to be priced separately on the quote. If it carries no premium at origin, the line will come back at zero and you will know what you have been paying for at home.

Ask for the price per kilo even when the offer arrives per box, and ask for the fill weight in the same message.

And check the destination mix of any exporter you are considering. In this category the country a supplier already serves tells you more about their product than the specification does.
